Two types of underfloor heating wet vs. dry:

The type of floor heating you choose can have a huge impact on your underfloor heating costs, especially after installation.  

Dry Underfloor Heating

  • Dry heating uses cables underneath your flooring to create heat. These can be lined mats or unorganised electric cables. More ideal for wood and carpet flooring, dry heating is generally more costly than wet floor heating due to electricity costs.
  • Dry heating is more suited to single room installation or older houses as it can be easy to install depending on the layout.
 

Wet Underfloor Heating

  • Wet heating is an underfloor pipe network connected to your central heating system.
  • An ideal option for new builds as everything can be centrally connected. It is also usually less costly as gas prices tend to be better than electricity prices.
  • Wet heat piping can be installed across all floor types including wood, marble and tile. Again, it is possible to install in existing buildings although a new build or full renovation is always better. This brings us on to our next cost factor.
 

New or old builds:

While it is perfectly possible to retrofit underfloor heating into existing buildings you may come into difficulty regarding plumbing, existing energy ratings and the layout of certain homes and structures. If it is an entire building that will be fitted with underfloor heating, then existing buildings will be far more costly as they will be much more labour intensive. For new builds costs are considerably less, however, they remain higher than traditional plumbing costs. The savings come in to play following the fitting and the great saving you make on energy and fuel costs.
